Mechanical Rotary Shaft Seals

In most applications, the primary function of mechanical rotary shaft seals is to retain the bearing lubricant, avoid leaks and minimize dust, dirt and moisture ingress that can lead to premature failure of the bearing and other system components.

GBSA provides a comprehensive range of mechanical rotary shaft seals and rotary lip seals to meet your application requirements. Our seals are designed to seal fluids, gas, oil, grease, and other media on rotating equipment. They also provide excellent resistance to wear, improving your system components’ long-term performance.

GBSA engineers can help you design seals for application needs such as:

  • High and medium pressure
  • Low friction or torque
  • Poor or no lubrication
  • High temperature
  • Shaft misalignment
  • Corrosive media

Rotary and Radial Shaft Seal Design Considerations

Given the important role mechanical seals play, the selection of a suitable seal size, design and material should be thoroughly thought out.

Size and Service Selection

It is important to consider shaft size and service limitations including; nominal shaft diameter, shaft speed, stuffing box dimensions, pressures, temperature and media the seal is exposed to.

Material Selection

When selecting materials, the most important factors to consider are the media the seal faces will be exposed to, the direction of shaft rotation and temperature.

Although many materials can be used depending on the application, the most common sealing face materials consist of ceramic, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide or carbon.

Balance Selection

Mechanical seals can either be balanced or unbalanced. Balanced mechanical seals are able to tolerate much more pressure, while unbalanced seals are better suited to situations with a higher tendency for misalignment and vibration.

Sometimes a job calls for a simple seal, but other times, a more robust mechanical seal is needed for optimum operating life and enhanced durability. No matter your need, you’ll always have the full support of GBSA’s engineers and professionals to help ensure you have selected the correct seal and material optimum for your application.

Assembly

Mechanical seals have two opposing faces; one rotates while the other is stationary. A spring provides the mechanical force necessary for sealing the ceramic faces. O-rings are also part of a mechanical seal. The o-rings act as a fluid barrier, usually stationary and do not rotate with one another like the ceramic faces do.
